A history of Men’s bow ties: from mercenaries to formal elegance

The origin of the bow tie dates back to the XVII century: at the time, Croatian mercenaries used to close the front opening of their shirts with a piece of cloth resembling a ribbon. French Men’s fashion took inspiration from this accessory, contributing to popularizing it throughout Europe. During the Regency era in the United Kingdom, one of the most defining pieces of clothing used for Men’s fashion was the neckcloth, a progenitor of both the bow tie and the cravat; the neckcloth called for many different styles of knotting, and the knowledge of all decorous looks was one of the most immediate elements showing the social status of a man. Nowadays, bow ties are worn both in casual situations and more formal social gatherings that require a specific standard of elegance. Bow ties are commonly used for wedding ceremonies, and usually complete the groom’s outfit in combination with matching pocket squares.
