A journey towards practical elegance: Women’s socks

The modern Women’s sock first appeared around World War I. In the absence of their male counterparts called to the front who had, until that point, handled some of the hardest manual tasks themselves, women of all Europe found themselves having to cover new job positions and to wear, as a result, more comfortable clothes that could help them work for longer hours. Contrary to the past, when women’s fashion was mainly dictated by aesthetic canons, the paradigm shifted towards more practical everyday fashion.
