Men’s socks in history: from Sumerians to contemporary times

Since antiquity, socks have been regarded as a primary way of protecting one person’s safety and comfort in all situations. That’s why we have historical traces of the usage of socks since a long time ago. At the time of ancient Egyptians and Sumerians, socks were a seamless canvas garment made in a similar way to modern crocheting. Their importance shows in their presence among grave goods found next to the Pharaoh’s tomb inside the pyramids.

Depending on one’s social standing, with the evolution of socks we see an evolution in the usage of fabrics: for nobility, silk socks were considered the go-to, while peasants who needed a stronger protection from the weather usually used wool for their footwear.

Historically, socks were held up by using ribbons or garters; nowadays, most socks are produced with a combination of natural materials like cotton together with elastic fiber for self-support.

Socks types and lengths: what’s the right choice between ankle sock and long sock?

Should your socks be up to the calf or up to the knee? Deciding on the right length for your outfit can be a difficult choice.

All BRUCLE Men’s socks are designed and handmade in Italy – more precisely, in the Venetian area.

Our original models are internally developed and renewed every year with new color variations and additions. All BRUCLE original patterns are not printed: each is created by using different colored yarns.

Socks in solid colors, houndstooth patterned, striped, dotted and tartan patterned… Our large sock collection has been recently widened with original patterns such as sea themed ones, lucky charm patterns and a whimsical ladybug variant; each one can easily meet your every mood for a colorful everyday style.

How does one match socks with the outfit and with shoes?

A successful outfit doesn’t ignore the potential of socks to make it or break it.
Ceremonial and formal events require more sober socks, usually in darker colors or in colors and patterns that don’t catch the viewer’s attention.
For every other occasion, even in work environments a man can choose to wear very colorful socks that match or beautifully contrast the hues of the overall outfit.
Be creative with your style! Dotted socks don’t clash with striped neckties, and different strong colors for your socks and other accessories can prove to be a very original and good-looking choice.

How to wash your BRUCLE Men’s socks

All socks from our new collection are made with only the best natural cotton and with non-toxic, hypoallergenic colors, therefore it would be advisable to gently wash them with a delicates washing machine setting at not over 30°C. You can easily iron them with a cotton iron setting.
